Steps For Getting Your Colorado Medical Marijuana Card

If you meet the above requirements for a Colorado medical cannabis card, there are additional steps you’ll need to take to obtain your card.

Step 1 - Get Certified by Your Healthcare Practitioner

Meet with your healthcare provider to discuss your qualifications for a medical marijuana card. If you suffer from one of the debilitating or disabling medical conditions outlined by the state, your practitioner can provide certification for a medical card in Colorado. This can be submitted by the provider electronically, or you can include it in your mail-in application.

If you are a minor, you will need to see two medical practitioners and obtain two certifications.

Step 2 - Apply for Your Medical Card Online

Before you begin your application, make sure you have the following items:

  • Valid Colorado ID or driver’s license
  • Social security number
  • Credit card or bank account (to pay the application fee)
  • Healthcare practitioner certification

The state of Colorado requires the applicant to pay a non-refundable processing fee of $29.50 for each application.

If you apply for your medical marijuana card through the state’s online system, it will take up to three days to receive your printable card. If you mail your application to the state, it will take up to eight weeks to receive your card.

Your medical practitioner certification is only good for one year, which means your card will expire within one year of your application approval. The expiration date will appear on your medical marijuana card.
