The Manager of Tissue Culture is responsible for overseeing all aspects of micropropagation at the Warren, MI grow location. This includes media preparation, initiating cultures, maintaining the mother block, transfers and multiplication, rooting, record keeping, cleaning the laboratory, and equipment maintenance. The Tissue Culture Manager will lead and supervise a team of technicians to accomplish these tasks. 

Essential Duties and/or Responsibilities




  • Prepare stock solutions and adequate quantities of tissue culture media and clone gel. Ensure adequate supplies of other materials for tissue culture protocols are prepared.
  • Work with the Research Scientist to optimize media requirements for different cultivars and stages of growth to ensure adequate multiplication rates are achieved.
  • Ensure media and other materials are autoclaved at correct cycles to achieve sterilization and that autoclaved materials are properly handled to maintain sterility.
  • Maintain strict cleanliness and organization of tissue culture laboratory and clone room spaces. 
  • Enforce strict lab entry and exit protocols to prevent introduction of contamination. Keep doors closed when not in use.
  • Ensure culture vessels, test tubes, clone trays, and all other lab equipment is cleaned effectively by dishwasher and/or hand washing.
  • Perform/schedule and keep a log of necessary maintenance and servicing of laboratory  equipment.
  • Follow strict sterile technique protocols when working in laminar flow hoods.
  • Perform meristem initiation from farm material as needed to create mother block cultures. Maintain mother block cultures by transferring to fresh media as directed.
  • Initiate multiplication groups from mother block cultures as needed. Transfer and propagate multiplication vessels as directed.
  • Track multiplication rates and ensure that technicians are achieving adequate multiplication.
  • Perform ex vitro rooting to fulfill production quotas. Acclimatize and garden cultures in the clone room.
  • Use InVitroSoft, Google Drive, Microsoft Excel, and any other program as directed to track and maintain detailed records of mother block, tissue culture transfers and multiplication, rooting and transplant quotas, supply inventories, and any other data and information as needed.
  • Follow SOPs and assist in modifying existing SOPs and developing new SOPs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including, but not limited to assisting other departments to help facilitate the additional and/or supplemental work such as harvesting, trimming, packaging, cleaning, and light maintenance as needed throughout the facility.


Work Environment

  • Communicate with the Operations Manager and Safety Coordinator to ensure a safe and efficient environment for all employees and plants. 
  • Monitor to ensure maintenance of proper moisture levels of clone cubes, proper environmental conditions in the clone room, transfer room, and mother block room, and proper functioning of equipment.
  • Maintain an adequate inventory of all laboratory materials.
  • Adhere to all work safety requirements including but not limited to lifting, bending, and moving up and down ladders throughout shift. 
  • Ensure all chemicals are properly stored and that SDS files are properly maintained.
  • Ensure all employees practice safe handling of all chemicals, including those used for media preparation and cleaning.
  • Ensure all employees wear necessary PPE for various tasks.
  • Before exiting the facility remove protective clothing and ensure that there is no cannabis on your personal clothing, shoes, or hair.



  • Ensure intradepartmental communication to optimize workflow and effective prioritization.
  • Work with Production, Operations, and Management  teams to address issues including problems with staffing, environmental targets, and equipment functioning.
  • Work with Data and Analytics and Production departments to ensure adequate quantities of mother block cultures and multiplication vessels are being maintained and that adequate quantities of cultures are being removed for rooting to meet transplanting quotas.
  • Partake in meetings with the supervisory team to discuss company changes.
  • Communicate changes to Delt’s standards, protocol, and policy to employees.
  • Communicate with all other departments to ensure proper implementation of tests, workflow, compliance, safety, etc. 




  • Assist to ensure compliance with all local, state and federal regulations.  


  • Assist to ensure that workflow and work procedures are documented and that appropriate controls and audits are in place to ensure data and processing integrity.
  • Facilitate the immediate adjustment of practices to accommodate compliance changes.



  • Manage employees, including hiring and training, planning and delegating work, evaluating performance, rewarding and disciplining, addressing complaints and resolving employee issues. 
  • Provide leadership and direction to employees to ensure the effective use and management of systems. Think in terms of operational efficiency, accessibility, security, and scalability.
  • Ensure staff is following company defined SOPs and performing assigned tasks to company standards of quality and productivity. Enforce all company policies/regulations.
  • Monitor employee attendance, time off balances, time off requests, and all other attendance related procedures/processes.
  • Prepare new SOPs as needed and submit them to the Research Scientist for approval.

  • Work collaboratively with all Delt’s employees and business partners.

  • Works under the direct supervision of the Senior Manager of Production and the Research Scientist
  • Supervises non-exempt employees.  


Job Qualifications


Work Experience and Knowledge

  • One to three years of leadership experience in a related industry or work environment.
  • Two to three years experience working with sterile technique.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, MS Excel, and Google Drive.
  • Organizational skills and a high level of attention to detail and cleanliness.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a distributed team of managers and associates, vendors, and community members. 
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal employment laws relating to key areas of responsibility.



  • BS degree in biology, horticulture, agriculture, or a related field required.

Working Conditions 

  • Able to use a computer, hand tools, and/or laboratory equipment while sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
  • Able to move about a typical office, laboratory, manufacturing, or warehouse environment.
  • Able to perform general office managerial and administrative activities.
  • Able to kneel, bend, reach, rotate, and stoop on an intermittent to regular daily basis.
  • Able to lift and move up to 30 pounds frequently.
  • Regular and on-time attendance.
  • Hours may regularly exceed 40 hours per week.
  • Occasional travel by conventional means including aircraft, motor vehicle and the like within the region and to other locations as required.

  • Must be able to pass any local, state, or federally mandated background checks to work within the Cannabis industry.
